Message from the PBS Police Dept. - Floatopia April 2 2017

March 28, 2017

Floatopia is an inflatable party craze which started in Santa Barbara, California and has invaded Peanut Island in West Palm Beach Florida. Participants have grown this boat/float party on Peanut Island into an annual celebration.

The event has a Facebook and Instagram page but is largely informally organized. The pages encourage anyone with a float to go out to Peanut Island with an anchor and cooler.

Due to the massive crowd, this event draws a large law enforcement presence. Last year multiple units from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office patrolled the venue to include– Marine, Aviation, Communications, Reserve, Road Patrol, and the Volunteer Unit. Other agencies also monitoring Floatopia included Palm Beach Shores PD, West Palm Beach PD, West Palm Beach Fire Rescue, Riviera Beach PD, Riviera Beach Fire Rescue, Florida Fishing and Wildlife Commission, and the U.S. Coast Guard Station Lake Worth.

Calls for service at Floatopia have included:

• Boating Accidents

• Drowning/Near Drowning

• Overturned boats

• Fights

• Individuals falling off docks

• Disturbances

• Boating-under-the-influence

• Underage drinking

This will be the 6th year for Floatopia in West Palm Beach Florida.  Floatopia at Peanut Island is anticipated to occur on 04/02/2017.
